Areas of Expertise

Diabetic Retinopathy

People with diabetes are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy can cause blindness and can be detected with a simple dilated eye exam. Early detection can prevent blindness. We have many treatment options for diabetic retinopathy that can be tailored to treat the individual person’s needs.

Macular Degeneration

Age-related Macular Degeneration is a common vision problem in people above the age of 65. Symptoms of AMD can be central vision loss, difficulty reading, and straight lines appearing wavy. There are many new treatments for Age-related Macular Degeneration available now that can help preserve vision.

Stargardt’s Disease

Stargardt’s disease is an inherited retinal illness that causes damage to the retina over time. Mutations in a gene named ABCA4 causes Stargardt’s disease. It can lead to vision loss in children and adults. Changes in color vision, light sensitivity, and decreased central vision can be clinical symptoms of Stargardt’s disease.

Retinitis Pigmentosa

Retinitis Pigmentosa is a genetic retinal illness that leads to vision loss. Retinitis Pigmentosa can be caused by over two hundred and sixty different genetic causes. Night blindness and loss of peripheral vision can be early symptoms of Retinitis Pigmentosa. Fortunately, there are many gene therapy clinical trials currently.

Retinal Vein Occlusions

Retinal Vein Occlusions are injuries to the retina due to compression of a retinal vein by a nearby artery or can be due to a blood clot in a retinal vein causing a blockage of normal blood flow. Retinal vein occlusion can cause painless central or peripheral vision loss. We currently have many treatment options for retinal vein occlusions.

What is Gene Therapy?

Gene therapy is a treatment based on introducing a working copy of a gene into cells that have a damaged copy of a gene. An analogy is like fixing a bad spark plug in a car by replacing it with a new spark plug. Gene therapy can also be used to introduce a gene that encodes for a therapeutic protein to treat a disease. In this case it is like fixing damaged wall by adding a support bracing.
