Retinal Vein Occlusion

What are Retinal Vein Occlusions?

Retinal Vein Occlusions are injuries to the retina due to compression of a retinal vein by a nearby artery or can be due to a blood clot in a retinal vein causing a blockage of normal blood flow. There are three types of retinal vein occlusion categorized based on where the blockage occurs in the retinal vascular, central retina vein occlusion (CRVO), hemi retinal vein occlusion (HRVO) and branched retinal vein occlusion (BRVO). BRVO are the most common type of retinal vein occlusion. Risk of RVO increases with age greater than 55 years old. Close monitoring of RVOs for several months following diagnosis is important to vision recovery.

Clinical Manifestations

Retinal vein occlusion can cause sudden, painless, central, or peripheral vision loss.

Retinal Vein Occlusion Risk Factors

- Age greater than 55 years old

- Hypertension

- Hyperlipidemia

- Oral contraceptives

- High intraocular pressures

- Smoking

- for CRVO Diabetes is a risk factor

Retinal Vein Occlusions affect people from 55yo and older.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of a retinal vein occlusion is made by a dilated eye exam by an ophthalmologist or an optometrist. Additionally, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fluorescein angiography (FA) are clinically imaging studies that aid in diagnosis and monitoring of retinal vein occlusions.

Treatment

We currently have many FDA approved treatment options for retinal vein occlusions. Intravitreal anti-VEGF agents such as aflibercept and ranibizumab are FDA-approved for the treatment of central retinal swelling caused by retinal vein occlusion. There is also an intravitreal dexamethasone implant that has received FDA approval for RVO treatment in 2009. Additionally, some patients with RVO may benefit from laser treatments. Please call to schedule a visit at our office if you would like to learn more about these exciting therapies.
